You don't lose Medicaid when you turn 65. Instead, you'll qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. There is a shift in your benefits when you become "Medi-Medi" eligible, and you can position yourself to take advantage of that change. You will be amazed at the extra benefits that are available at no extra cost.
Your first step is to enroll in Parts A & B of Medicare. Don't delay--this process is not quick. You can enroll at your local Social Security office, by calling them at (800) 772-1213, or online here: Medicare Enrollment. Of course you can also get this done by calling a trusted and service-oriented, licensed and AHIP certified, health insurance agent.
Almost everyone with Medicaid qualifies for free Medicare coverage, though it may require extra steps. There are programs to make sure your healthcare is free even if you don't have "enough" work credits for Part A.
There are three common programs to help pay for your benefits:
QMB covers premiums for Parts A & B.
SLMB covers Part B premiums.
LIS, or Extra Help, covers the premiums of Part D.
State-specific forms are often out of date. If a form leads you to believe you may not qualify, contact an experienced professional--don't rely on advice from an unlicensed, inexperienced, or call center employee.
If you have questions or concerns about transitioning to Medi-Medi coverage, Medicare Savings Plans, extra benefits through Advantage Plans, doctor networks, or prescription coverage, please give my office a call. We're happy to help!
